How to avoid downtime

BPW’s drum brakes are here to decrease downtime and keep your fleets on the road.

For commercial fleets, reliability isn’t optional – it’s essential. Every minute a trailer is off the road directly impacts operational efficiency and profitability. BPW braking systems are designed to meet these demands, aiming to ensure optimal performance and reduced whole-life costs. Whether choosing the trusted drum brake or the highperformance disc brake, fleet operators benefit from braking systems that are built for durability, safety, and ease of maintenance – keeping commercial vehicles where they belong – on the road.

The BPW drum brake remains one of the most trusted solutions in the UK transport industry, valued for its proven brake performance and cost-effectiveness. Its encapsulated design protects critical components from dust, dirt, and water ingress, helping to reduce downtime and maximise mileage.

It offers features like a central pull-off spring. The high tensile force of this specifically designed component means the brake rapidly resets to its original position. Meanwhile, precise location ‘C’ clips hold the brake shoes securely in place. The brake shoe pivot is offset by 30 degrees, enhancing stability and protecting the anchor pin. Brake rollers, which include long-life lubrication, guarantee smooth running properties and consistent braking efficiency.

Durability and efficiency

Designed for durability and efficiency, the BPW ECO disc brake (TS2) represents the next generation of Europe’s most successful trailer disc brake. This advanced braking system builds on the robust features of the original ECO disc brake caliper, but the TS2 is lighter.

The TS2 disc brake offers its own set of unique features. Operating with modern single offset tappet technology and an enhanced pad backplate reinforcement, gives an even distribution of braking force within the pad and disc, ensuring a longer service life.

Due to the compact design, the brake is directly connected to the axle beam and fully integrated into the system, making it one of the lightest braking systems on the market. In a standard tri-axle setup, the TS2 can achieve a weight saving of up to 12 kilograms, improving fuel efficiency and increasing payload capacity – key benefits for transport operations.

How to avoid downtime

Hub technology

Patented over 30 years ago, the BPW ECO hub system has been at the foundation of BPW running gear ever since. Designed for the high-duty cycles of modern transport, it’s a robust reliable system designed for a long service life.

The BPW-patented ECO hub system works in unison with the BPW drum and disc brake braking systems, simplifying brake maintenance and minimising downtime. Inspired by Formula One pit stops, the F1 principle allows the quick removal of the entire wheel and hub assembly without the need for special tools.

When it’s time to replace the disc, the BPW ECO principle allows this to be done without removing the caliper (depending on disc size), saving up to three hours per vehicle of workshop time compared to conventional systems.

Design features include DIN ISO tapered roller bearings, which can be inspected, regreased and repacked easily without having to fit a complete new hub and an integrated torque-limiting hub nut. This single-threaded nut follows the F1 principle, with the nut acting as a puller.

Minimising vehicle downtime

Maintaining a trailer’s roadworthiness requires a braking system that can withstand the toughest operating conditions. BPW drum brakes, for example, incorporate a multi-seal unit that prevents contaminants from entering the system. A labyrinth of seals is positioned in front of the grease seal, while an integrated dust lip fully seals the bearings. A grease-retaining sheath enhances the brake’s longevity by ensuring optimal grease retention, extending service life and reducing maintenance intervals. This combination of advanced sealing technology means fewer servicing requirements.

For fleet operators seeking maximum uptime, reduced maintenance costs, and reliable industry-leading performance, BPW braking systems remain the trusted choice.
