IMI Jobs Portal enables under-16 work experience

The automotive industry’s latest initiative to address its workforce skills gap takes a major step forward, as the IMI Jobs Portal officially launches work experience placements for school-aged pupils in 2025.
Part of the Automotive Work Experience (AWE) Programme, the portal now enables pupils under the age of 16, educators, and businesses to connect, providing young people with industry experience.
Launched by the School of Thought Automotive in partnership with The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) and Autotech Academy, the AWE Programme is designed to tackle the skills crisis that has left the industry with an estimated shortfall of what is said to be nearly 18,000 skilled professionals.
Initially unveiled during the inaugural Automotive Work Experience Week (AWE) last year, the programme apparently sparked conversation across the sector, reportedly garnering over 8,000 visits to the School of Thought Automotive’s website during its launch week alone.
Changing Perceptions, Building Futures
Designed to challenge the misconceptions surrounding careers in the automotive industry, AWE aims to showcases the diversity of roles available, from technical and mechanical positions to management and marketing pathways. Work experience placements offered through the IMI Jobs Portal are set to provide young people with a practical taste of what the sector has to offer, aligning with Gatsby Benchmark 6, which underscores the importance of workplace experiences for pupils by the age of 16 and again by the age of 18.
Dave Reece, Founder of School of Thought Automotive, commented: “Addressing the skills gap is not just about filling current vacancies. It’s about investing in the future. Work experience is vital in showcasing the diverse career paths within the automotive industry, helping young individuals realise their potential and passion early on.”
For participating automotive businesses, the initiative offers an opportunity to engage with the next generation of skilled professionals. It’s said placements can be tailored to suit each company’s needs, ranging from a single day to a week or even a few hours per week, ensuring flexibility for both pupils and employers. With nearly 100 placements said to be already pledged, the portal remains open for more businesses to register their support.
Dave continued: “This programme isn’t just about inspiring the next generation. It’s about opening up a direct dialogue between businesses and young people. By pledging work experience, businesses not only help solve the skill shortage but also discover talent that could ultimately drive their success.”
The School of Thought Automotive says it also ensures that businesses receive support, including work experience packs with clear guidance on structuring placements, adhering to safety protocols, and supporting pupils’ growth during their time in the workplace.
The work experience portal is now live, enabling pupils and schools to secure placements, while remaining open for businesses to continue pledging their support. Work experience through the AWE Programme is designed to not only fulfil the automotive sector’s current and future needs but also empower the next generation to explore a rewarding career path.
