PPG introduces anti-viral disinfectant

PPG has introduced the D20R, an anti-viral disinfectant for use in industrial hygiene protocols to tackle Covid-19.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has left businesses needing to introduce strict hygiene measures to keep their employees and visitors safe. In particular, the strain of coronavirus that causes Covid-19 (SARS CoV-2) can reportedly survive for as long as two to three days on common plastic and metal surfaces, making surfaces a particular area of focus for hygiene regimes. This has created an unprecedented requirement for widely accessible and highly effective anti-viral surface disinfectants that are also non-hazardous.

To help combat this, PPG has created D20R – an anti-viral, water-based disinfectant solution for hard surfaces that has reportedly been proven to kill even the toughest viruses and bacteria, including the enveloped viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, which causes Covid-19.

With experiencing developing chemical products for surfaces in a wide range of industrial environments – and with the infrastructure to do so on a mass scale – PPG has created an anti-viral disinfectant that is available in large quantities.

To create D20R, the company has taken its existing bactericidal and virucidal formulations that are said to kill even the toughest of organisms and evolved this technology to maximise efficiency against the enveloped viruses. Great care has also been taken to ensure it is safe to use and compatible with a wide range of materials and environments found in the industrial sector.

The active agent in D20R is a type of quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) recognised by WHO as effective in deactivating viruses such as SARS CoV-2. It breaks down membranes of the virus, which deactivates it and instantly stops it in its tracks. The product is water-based and is said to be non-hazardous, non-flammable, non-abrasive, non-corrosive and has no smell.

D20R has been qualified to EN14476, EN1276 and EN13697 standards for its virucidal and bactericidal effects. It also has yeasticidal activity as per EN1650 and EN13697. The product is suitable for use on hard surfaces such as floors, walls, furniture and other high-touch surfaces via an impregnated wipe or spray application. It comes ready to use and should not be diluted. The solution should be applied so all surfaces are fully covered, then left wet for five minutes before wiping off with a clean cloth, mop or sponge. Note: Product can be used but is not certified for use with foggers.

The product should be used as part of an ongoing, formalised hygiene regime that adheres to official best practice guidelines and/or which has been developed for businesses in conjunction with a hygiene specialist.

D20R is available in a 5L packsize, which can be used to fill empty, clean bottles that have a spray pump head.
