Fault Diagnosis: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Snap-on explains how its VERSUS Edge software enabled a technician to fix an issue with the accelerator pedal sensor on a 2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, 2.2L diesel.

Complaint

The customer stated that the check engine light was on.

Cause

1. The technician carried out the following steps:Connected a scan tool and found the following codes: P1222 – B37 (Pedal Value Sensor) Sensor 1 Plausibilty 1 and P1234 – B37 (Pedal Value Sensor) Sensor 2 Implausible Sensor 1/2.

2. Performed an accelerator pedal sweep, monitored the accelerator pedal position sensor signal parameters using the scan tool, and found that the accelerator pedal position sensor signal parameters did not maintain the specified correlation as the accelerator pedal was swept.

3. With the key on and engine off, used a multimeter to check for the presence of voltage and ground at the accelerator pedal position sensor and found that both were present.

4. Performed an inspection of the accelerator pedal position sensor wiring harness and connectors and found there were no loose connections or signs of damage.

5. Used a lab scope to back-probe the accelerator pedal position sensor signal circuit and performed an accelerator pedal sweep to monitor the sensor signal. The accelerator pedal position sensor signal observed on the lab scope was erratic as the accelerator pedal was swept.

Correction

As a solution, the technician replaced the accelerator pedal, cleared the codes and verified the vehicle operated properly. The customer’s concern did not return.
