How to replace the pads in a SAF SBS 2220 caliper

IMS Ltd, exclusive importer and distributor of the SAF-Holland product range and OE parts within the UK & Ireland, has produced a series of step-by-step guides covering the SAF INTRADRUM and INTRADISC axles. Here, IMS describes the process of replacing the brake pads within the SAF SBS 2220 brake caliper.

The SAF SBS 2220 is a new brake caliper and features a retaining bar with a different configuration compared to previous versions. IMS stresses the importance of fitting OE replacement parts to ensure that SAF axles run safely and at optimum efficiency, as well as for extended longevity. Before engaging in the process of replacing brake pads in a SAF caliper, IMS recommends viewing the instructional video available online at www.imslimited.com.

1.

Remove the reset shaft protection plug.

2.

Using a Torx 55 socket on a ratchet, turn the reset shaft anti-clockwise. Keep turning until the thrust plate retracts to its inner position.

3.

A clicking noise will be heard when winding the shaft (do not exceed 20Nm of force on the shaft).

4.

Turn the adjuster 90° clockwise once wound fully back to re-engage the adjust function.

5.

Remove the pad retainer spring clip by pushing and holding the spring bracket. A tool may be used to aid removal.

6.

Remove the pad spring clips and the retainer clip spring.

7.

Remove the brake pads – the outer pad first – then push the caliper slider to free up space to remove the inner pad from the two mounting holes on the thrust plate.

8.

With the pads removed, check the caliper sliders for ease of movement by sliding the caliper back and forth.

9.

If there is any substantial resistance, please seek advice on the repair/replacement of the caliper.

10.

Thoroughly check and clean the pad mounting surfaces, removing any debris or corrosion. Clean the thrust plate as necessary.

11.

If using solvents near the caliper seals, ensure they’re non-corrosive and that they won’t damage the rubber seals.

12.

Install the inner pad in the carrier, noting that the pad locates on the two locators on the thrust plate.

13.

Slide the caliper and install the outer brake pad.

14.

Install the lock bar retaining spring, followed by the pad springs.

15.

Slide the lock bar into the locator in the caliper housing and over the spring clip.

16.

Ensure the spring locates properly in thelock bar and that the pad securing springs are correctly seated.

17.

Whilst the brake is being applied, check that the 55 Torx bit in the adjuster rotates clockwise, confirming that the adjuster mechanism is working correctly.

18.

Wind the adjuster shaft fully clockwise until it stops. With the pad now fully up against the disc, rotate the adjuster anti-clockwise two full clicks.

19.

The setup is now complete, refit adjuster shaft bung.
