CVW speaks to Ring Automotive to discover more about its LCV safety systems and how they can help reduce costs.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, each year the UK records more than 5,000 accidents involving workplace transport, with poor visibility and being struck when reversing listed as the common causes. More can be done to improve visibility for drivers, whether they are in the workshop, or on the roads.
Advice from the Health and Safety Executive suggests that reversing aids, such as CCTV and sensors have an important role to play in reducing accidents. This advice reinforces why commercial vehicle safety systems are more than optional extras, but a necessity that can help to identify hazards, and in turn reduce incidents.
Showcasing its latest developments with vehicle safety systems, Ring, supplier to the automotive aftermarket and vehicle conversion sector, looks at how this technology is offering peace of mind for drivers and for business owners operating light commercial vehicles.
Henry Bisson, Marketing Manager at Ring, comments: “Whatever the hazard – pedestrians, equipment, buildings or even other vehicles – safety systems, such as reversing and brake light cameras, put drivers in control enhancing safety in a cost-effective way.
“As a result, we are seeing more and more fleets and operating sites demand the fitment of these systems, this is increasingly becoming a job expected of the workshop technician.
“The systems help to improve the awareness of potential hazards, which can reduce accidents and help to meet obligations imposed by health and safety legislation.

Caught on camera
Recognising the important role these systems play, Ring has complemented its 7.0″ Camera System, which has been specifically designed to support light commercial vehicles, with two higher spec models. Bisson adds: “There are a number of Vehicle Safety Systems on the market, which can make the decision somewhat overwhelming. Key points to consider when purchasing these market leading tools are budget and choosing a model that is fit for purpose. This avoids costly models that feature extras that simply aren’t necessary, giving customers the option to choose one that is suitable for their vehicle.”
Ring’s RGB1070 is a rear view, CMOS camera (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) that offers two camera inputs and a Pin Aviation connector that is screw locking. This entry level model is designed to offer easy to use features that are important when choosing the right system, including automatic operation when reversing is selected.
Full colour, to enhance visibility and including LED Infra-red night vision, the RGB1070 is designed to work effectively at any time of day. New to market is Ring’s Dual (RBG2070) and Wireless (RBGW4070) Camera Systems. Each offers a HD CMOS Camera sensor to provide higher definition images and picture clarity that is comparable with more expensive CCD (Charge Coupled Device).
Brake Kits
These latest models join Ring’s range of Brake Light Camera Kits for specific LCV’s, which have been designed to easily replace the existing manufacturers fitted high level brake lights to retain the OEM look. Each brake light camera (RBGCBMS/RBGCBFT/RBGCBGV/RBGCBRT/RBGCBFD) provides a wide angle, high level view to aid safe reversing of LCV vehicles. With a 120° viewing angle, 9 x IR LED and an infra-red distance of 7m, options are also available to create a complete twin channel kit with dashboard or rear view mirror mounting monitors.
Bisson adds: “Brake light camera kits are simple to install, flexible and retain the streamlined look and feel created by manufacturers.
“Whilst wireless camera systems offer an all in one system, brake light cameras are perfect for drivers looking for an upgrade or replacement that is easy to fit. Each is developed with a vehicle model in mind, which means that they fit seamlessly.
“Having your monitor mounted on the rear-view mirror or dash board is also an important consideration for drivers; with a brake light camera, drivers can tailor the rest of the kit, choosing the accessories that are right for them and their driving style.” Whether choosing a camera system or kit, both play a vital role in increasing visibility and improving safety in a quick and efficient way.
